Does having a college degree strengthen the likelihood that you’ll be successful in the later chapters of you life? Just about all of us at Gamer 2.0 are college graduates. (Although look at our lives. Would you really call this “successful”)? That said, however, a college degree isn’t always the key to attaining life’s greater spoils. There are countless stories of college dropouts who “make it in life,” and it’s those same bohemians who end up with the lion’s share of the media attention. Why? Because we love the unusual.

Stories of success can be seen everywhere, including the video game industry. And you would be surprised just how many of our most revered game designers never “walked.”

John Carmack - University of Missouri-Kansas City (Dropped Out)
John Carmack
John Carmack, co-founder of iD Software, and heralded lead programmer of highly popular games such as Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein 3D, dropped out of the University of Missouri-Kansas City after only two semesters of schooling.

Elonka Dunin - UCLA (Dropped Out)
Elonka Dunin
Lesser known Elonka Dunin is a wildly famous cryptographer as well as an executive and video game developer at Simutronics Corp. She is also the senior editor of the IGDA State of the Industry White Papers. Dunin dropped out of UCLA after a year.

Will Wright - Louisiana Tech & The New School (Dropped Out)
Will Wright
Will Wright, whose achievements in the industry speak volumes, jumped between many schools over the course of five years, ultimately never getting a degree. He started at Louisiana State University, then transferred to Louisiana Tech after two years. After two years at Louisiana Tech, he transferred to The New School in Manhattan, where he lasted only a year before finally moving back to Baton Rouge degree-less.
