Age of Pirates: Captain Blood Impressions
May 16,2006 - Pirates are all the rage. We can thank Johnny Depp most likely, since his portrayal of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean delighted (and confused) millions of fans worldwide. Yet gamers have always been fascinated with pirates, and the proliferation of pirate-themes titles on the E3 show floor was living proof.

Two of these pirate games are from Akella and Playlogic, and we got a chance to play both of them on the show floor. Both of them sport the title “Age of Pirates,” with different subtitles. The first, Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales, is a pirate sim game. It involves such goodies as ship-to-ship battles, letting the player control up to four ships at one time. It’s also from the makers of Sea Dogs and its follow-up, Pirates of the Caribbean (aka, Sea Dogs 2). Caribbean Tales sports the winning combination of strategy, action, and role-playing made famous in Sid Meier’s Pirates!, and we look forward to the results.

Akella is understandably most prideful of the new graphics capabilities of their engine. They promise weather effects on the level of The Perfect Storm—and if that’s the case, you better prepare yourself for the deluge. The small portion of the game we saw in action featured excellent water effects, and the slow-moving pace of the ocean action allowed us to admire the beautiful skybox.

Age of Pirates: Captain Blood is the action-based title of the duo. Based on the novels of Rafael Sabatini, Captain Blood is an action hack-and-slash extravaganza. Our first mission involved protecting the city gates, but quickly evolved into a gory free-for-all. Our hero not only had a sword at his disposal, but was armed with a pistol. Both weapons controlled well, and even better, could be combined into the bloodiest finishing moves we’ve ever seen.

Our only issue with Captain Blood was the awkward camera, which isn’t player-controlled and didn’t always show the best view. However, there’s still time to tweak this and other issues before the title’s release in the third quarter of 2006. Amped IGO will bring you new information on the Age of Pirates games as it develops. AAAARGH!
