Dead Space Preview
April 10,2008 - Despite how fast technology can grow, the chances of failure will always catch up to it. Enter the story. When something on a ship goes wrong, you catch wind of it and receive its distress signal. But oh noes! You have found this particular distress call has lured you into a dangerous situation.
Lord knows how many times you have heard and played through situations like this, but EA Redwood Shores doesn’t seem to care. Welcome to Dead Space, their latest project. The game puts you in the shoes of Isaac Clarke, a space engineer working for Concordance Extraction Corporation. The ship you’re heading after is one that breaks down dead planets into valuable ore for the corporation.
Unfortunately for you, your day job is ruined by a group of nasty aliens known as the Necromorphs. Just like plenty of other aliens prior to their existence, the alien commandeers human hosts, mutating and deforming them. You will come across several variations of these beasts, such as a carriers and slashers. Sounds like Halo’s Flood, especially since you’ll be able to slash them to hell. We hope that this aspect will provide some decent pleasure.
To help you on your journey, you will have an array of weaponry at your disposal. Being the blue-collar working man you are, one of your main tools will be a plasma cutter. A stasis gun and kinetic abilities will also help you dispose of your run-of-the-mill aliens. If that isn’t enough for you, you’ll also have a space suit to beef yourself up.
Why couldn’t be the true working man’s game? We’re cool with the engineer thing, but what’s wrong with a game focusing on a miner named Roscoe? Give us a wrench, space overalls, a hardhat, and a team of four other guys who “don’t take no crap from no stinkin’ aliens” and we’re good.
Anyway, the game looks pretty at least. You’ll be encountering some good smoke effects and the like when you’re traveling around what are sure to be repetitive environments. Not sure yet about the sound, so we’ll see by the time the game rolls around.
The gameplay is looking to be intriguing. Using your stasis gun, you can not only throw your enemies around but also use it to propel yourself to where you want to be. So if you see a crate floating by, leech onto to it all you like. The gun can also be used to bounce yourself upwards but we’re calling a 50/50 shot that using that feature gets incredibly old.
Being of the survival horror genre, we wouldn’t be surprised if there is an incredible amount of downtime throughout the game that fails to rack up suspense points. They have plenty of time to make sure it’s as creepy as can be.
Like we just said, there is still plenty of time for EA Redwood Shores to crank out a quality game. Unfortunately, we just aren’t impressed too much with anything we’ve seen thus far. Keep to the GameHUB for any new videos or screenshots.
