Gears of War 2 Firstlook

As far as gameplay is concerned, the same basic core concepts are still intact, but a few changes have been incorporated to give fans more of what they loved while adding fresh new ideas in the process. Some of the new weapons have unique active reload systems and require a different form of button presses to perform. Although Epic hasn’t revealed anything yet, they said it is nothing out of the ordinary and something all fans should easily enjoy. The new Hammer Burst COG weapon, a sort of shotgun heavy fire gun, will surely help in those cornered situations, while the Locust Gorgon Burst Pistol can be equally as effective and devastating. Of course Poison Grenades make an appearance as well, and anyone stuck within the radius of the blast will slowly die from the toxins.

The creatures are much more intense as well, with new Locust creatures evolving and joining the fray. Epic has promised intense boss battles that will feel like epic confrontations (no pun intended) with bosses that make the Brumak (the giant creature at the end of the Gears of War commercial) seem like a baby. Imaginable odds await those who fight through the game, and luckily the COG forces have enough heavy machinery to help even the odds a bit. The Derrick (Dizzy’s ride of choice) can transport COG soldiers around the terrain. Equipped with automatic firepower on the top and a drop-out mechanism on the bottom that can shoot soldiers underground, the Derrick is a formidable addition to the Coalition. You will also get to try your hands on the new COG Centaur Tank, which is half monster truck, half military tank for ultimate destruction.

The multiplayer aspects have been given the same insight and changes as the campaign mode. Cooperative play is now much more streamlined for casual players and you won’t have to worry about restarting a game when someone joins or exits your game mid-mission. The new add/drop feature allows instant playability from both sides, with no longer having to wait at loading screens if someone interrupts your session. Also included is the ability to choose separate difficulties, so if you aren’t as gung-ho as your buddy, knock it down a notch and shoot Locusts at an easier setting, making it enjoyable for both parties. Epic has also added a fourth difficulty for those truly casual gamers who felt the first game was still too tough on the easiest setting. Epic hopes this new difficulty will help branch out those gamers who want to have a great time but won’t be bogged down by the ravaging gameplay, plus it should allow more fun in the co-op mode as well.

With so much to look forward to and so much riding on making this sequel better than the first, Epic has a lot on their hands. Everything from the story to the smallest tweaks in visual effects are being worked and re-worked to ensure complete satisfaction from all gamers. While Gears of War 2 is slowly approaching its November release, from what we have seen so far, it is shaping up to be one of the most impressive and dynamic games of 2008.
