Grand Theft Auto IV Impressions
April 3,2007 - Rockstar sure knows how to get people buzzing. For weeks, the official website for the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series featured nothing but a countdown clock, but thousands of people were still waiting anxiously as the final seconds ticked away. As the first official trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV became available, many sites across the Web struggled underneath the sudden demand. Was this first look worth the wait?

"Things will be different," the narrator says in the trailer, and that much is certainly clear. The footage focuses on the setting of Liberty City, but this is not the same Liberty City we spent so much time in when GTA III exploded onto the scene over five years ago. Liberty City has been completely redesigned and now looks—for all intents and purposes—like New York City, gorgeously rendered and brought to life. The trailer opens with glimpses of subway cars squeaking along under a harsh sky, a blue sports car rolling along in the shadow of a Coney Island-inspired roller coaster, a battered sedan meandering through a dingy neighborhood, and seagulls soaring around a dilapidated ferry building. Then the trailer takes off, featuring brief but unmistakable glimpses of New York landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and the MetLife Building, though in typical Rockstar fashion (perhaps not everything will be different), it's been re-christened the GetaLife Building. Keen eyes may spot references to shops from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, such as BurgerShot and Cluckin' Bell Chicken. Throughout it all, the hustle and bustle of life in New York--err, Liberty City--seems very much in effect, as we see traffic moving along and people scurrying about their business.

The trailer slows down in its final moments as a bearded man appears while a voiceover says, with an accent seemingly of Eastern European origins, "Life is complicated. I've killed people. Smuggled people. Sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different." Then, as quickly as it began, it ends, fading to black, leaving only a large, bold “IV” on the screen.

We do know that the game is powered with the RAGE engine, seen previously in Rockstar Presents Table Tennis. But that's about all we know. The official name of the trailer is Things Will Be Different, but what differences Rockstar has in store for the gameplay remain to be seen. Will the game be set strictly in the newly re-imagined Liberty City, or will that be just one of the games locales? Does it take place in the present? What can we expect from the in-game radio stations? And what about the overall story? Unfortunately, for answers to all of these questions, we still have to wait. Rockstar also knows how to leave people wanting more, and as soon as we know more, so will you. Grand Theft Auto IV is currently scheduled for release on the Xbox 360 and PS3 on October 16th of this year.
