Legendary: The Box Firstlook
February 19,2008 - Pandora’s Box is said to hold all the evils of mankind. A gift from Zeus himself that, once opened, would unleash madness, greed, vanity, plague and turmoil upon the world. Without boring you too much on mythological lore, this is where Legendary: The Box picks up, with all the destruction and chaos derived from Pandora’s Box being set loose onto the streets of New York City.

Flash back to the night prior to the box being opened and we meet our unlikely savant, Charles Deckard. As a master thief, Deckard is tasked with stealing a valuable and ancient artifact from the National Museum of Art in New York. But just like how curiosity killed the cat, Deckard soon opens the prized possession and creates endless panic in the streets, reminiscent of something you would see in the Cloverfield movie. After an endless array of fireworks light the sky, devastating creatures torment the citizens of New York. Deckard, feeling guilty for ultimately destroying the world, soon realizes his fate has been controlled by an evil organization known as the Black Order, an out-worldly group with intentions of global domination.

The enemies in Legendary: The Box are anything but merciless. They will kill you on sight and they will not hesitate when approached. What makes Legendary so intense is how menacing these creatures truly are and how they react to your movements and surrounding areas. The agile werewolf for instance can climb ceilings and tall structures in an effort to flank you. If you stand idle for too long, however, it will slowly tear apart your barricade leaving you invulnerable for impending attack. Many of the creatures react in a similar fashion, but all have distinct styles of fighting. For instance, griffons (eagles with the bodies of lions) usually fly through the air in pairs while minotaurs prefer solo melee fighting.

Don’t expect to be breezing through the game as you parade down the streets. Plenty of colossal creatures wait around every corner to take you down. There was one instance of a giant golem rising up from the ground and taking form using the structures it came into contact with. Meaning, you will not only be fighting a giant golem, you will be fighting a giant golem with steel beams for arms and concrete slabs for a body.

If for whatever reason you feel like you are in over your head at any point, you can always call on the help of the Black Order to protect you. While their intentions are not plainly shown, you can form alliances with certain characters in order to tackle on the stronger beasts. Forming alliances is not necessary to advance through the game, as you can ultimately kill every member of the Black Order for backstabbing you anyways, but using them to your advantage can sometimes lead to bigger victories. Besides using standard guns and other characters to ward off foes, Deckard also gains the unique ability to suck health out of fallen foes by using a power that was forged upon him when he opened the box.

From what we have seen so far, Legendary: The Box looks to be a thrilling experience with tons of explosive action and intimidating enemies. Spark Unlimited has crafted a gripping tale full of destruction and chaos set in the heart of New York City. Be sure to check out Legendary: The Box when it arrives this spring for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.
