Sega Rally Revo Impressions
September 17,2007 - It's been a long time since we've seen a Sega Rally game. The last time one made its way to a home console was Sega Rally 2, on the Dreamcast. The series has been on hiatus for quite some time, but it looks like Sega Rally is back and in a big way.

The series is known for its easy to play nature. That holds true in Revo. It's very easy to just jump in and start powersliding around corners. That's not to say that the driving model is simple It's easy to get into, but there is a lot of subtlety to it. Revo uses a terrain deformation system that dynamically alters the track as you race around it. You'll leave rut and tire grooves in the track surface that affect how the car will handle on that particular section the next time around. Trying to hit these grooves is a good idea since your car will get etter grip on packed dirt than it would on loose dirt. It's a nice system that does its job well and feels natural. At the same time, the driving model is pure old-school arcade style. Sega Rally Revo is definately drawing from its roots, while at the same time trying to advance itself.

Visually the game looks excellent. The cars are very detailed, as you'd expect from a next-generation game. They get dirty as you drive around the track, you'll pick up mud, dust, snow, and so forth. It's really quite ramarkable to see the car all clean at the start of the race, and watch as it gets totally filthy by the time the race is done. On top of that though, the game looks like a Sega Rally title. It's got that bright and colorful look that have become a trademark of the series. All in all, it's looking like a solid return.

In game audio is sounding great so far. There's plenty of distinct sounds for the various surfaces you'll be driving over. The cars all have a really nice sharp growl to their engine notes, so they really sound like the high-end machines they are. The music so far has been the kind of stylized rock that has always been present in Sega Rally games. There's even a few key sounds from the original making a return.

Sega Rally Revo is looking like a fine return for this series. Fans of the older games will definately want to keep their eyes open for this one.
